Reading Desert Ground Before You Build
An ecological assessment measures soils, washes and seasonal water. Here is what gets measured, what gets declared, and what a landowner can record first.

An ecological assessment measures the ground itself: soil texture and depth, the shape and age of washes, where water stands after a storm, and which plants grow where. It separates what a surveyor can measure from what a landowner or a consultant can only declare. On a desert plot, most of the useful reading happens before anyone is called.
The same discipline applies in wetter country. In northern New England, consultants read soils, wetlands and spring pools the same way, and a field reference for that work describes the method plainly: ecological assessment practice starts with the ground, not the paperwork. Desert ground asks the same questions with less water to hide the answers.
What does an ecological assessment actually measure?
An assessment measures four things on the ground. Soil texture and depth come first, because sand, silt and clay hold water differently and a shallow caliche layer stops roots. Second is topography: slope, aspect and the low points where water collects. Third is vegetation, mapped by species and cover rather than described in general terms. Fourth is water, meaning the ordinary flow of a wash and the marks it leaves.
What gets measured is repeatable. A soil pit is dug to a stated depth and the horizons are logged. A wash cross section is surveyed with a tape and a level. Plant cover is estimated in plots of a fixed size, often ten meters by ten meters, and the numbers are recorded per species. Flow marks are measured from the channel bed to the top of the scour line.
What gets declared is everything else. The age of a wash, the likelihood of a flood in a given year, the presence of a species that was not seen that day, the condition of the soil under a crust that was not broken: these are judgments. A good assessment states them as judgments and gives the evidence behind them.
How do you read a desert wash before planting?
Read a wash from its banks inward. The bank shows the high water line as a trim line on shrubs, a change in soil color, or a band of fresh sand. That line tells you how high water has run, not how high it might run. The channel bed shows the size of the material moved: gravel means fast water, sand means slower water, cobbles mean the wash has moved them at some point.
Look at what grows on the banks and what grows in the bed. Mesquite and palo verde on the terrace above the wash tolerate dry roots. Arrowweed and seep willow near the channel tolerate wet roots. Where those two groups meet is the ordinary water table for that reach.
Check the wash for braiding. A single deep channel carries water fast and scours. A braided channel spreads water and drops sand. A plot planted in a braided reach will be buried and uncovered in turn. A plot planted on a terrace above the trim line will stay dry but may need irrigation for the first two years.
Record the direction of the wash and the direction of the slope. Water arrives from upstream, and a plant placed on the upstream edge of a plot takes the first hit. Leave the upstream edge open or plant it with species that tolerate scour.
What can a landowner record before calling anyone?
A landowner can record five things with a notebook, a shovel and a camera, and those records make a later assessment cheaper and more accurate.
First, dig a hole one foot deep in three or four places and photograph the side of the hole with a coin or a ruler in frame for scale. Note the color and the feel of each layer. Second, mark the high water line in the nearest wash with a stake and photograph it. Third, list the plants you can name and photograph the ones you cannot, with a close view of the leaf and a wide view of the plant. Fourth, note the date and the depth of any standing water after a storm. Fifth, note where the ground is bare and where it holds a crust.
These records are declarations, not measurements, but they are dated and located, and that is what a consultant needs. A photograph of a wash bank in August with a stake at the trim line is worth more than a memory of a flood in July.
What is measured and what is only declared?
Measured items have units. Soil depth is in inches or centimeters. Slope is in percent. Plant cover is in percent per species per plot. Channel width is in feet or meters. Water depth after a storm is in inches, with a date and a time.
Declared items have reasons. A consultant declares that a wash is ephemeral, meaning it flows only after rain, and gives the evidence: the plant species present, the lack of a defined bed in places, the soil texture. A consultant declares that a plot is outside the floodplain, and gives the evidence: the trim line, the terrace elevation, the age of the shrubs.
The difference matters when a permit is involved. A county or state reviewer will ask for the measurements and accept the declarations if the reasoning is stated. A declaration without evidence is an opinion, and an opinion is the first thing a reviewer sets aside.
Why the desert year sets the schedule
Desert ground reads differently in each season, and the reading has to match the season. Summer heat dries the upper soil and hides shallow water. The monsoon arrives in July and August in the American Southwest, and washes that were dry in June run in August. Cool nights in fall and winter keep the soil moist longer, and that is when soil pits are easiest to read. The tourist season brings traffic and noise but also the best access to remote plots on maintained roads.
An assessment done in June will miss the monsoon flow. An assessment done in February will miss the summer plants. Two visits, one before the monsoon and one after, cover more ground than one long visit in the middle.
What the ground tells you before you dig
A patch of desert ground carries its own record. The size of the material in a wash records the speed of past water. The plants on a bank record the depth of the water table. The crust on the soil records how long it has been since anything disturbed it. None of that requires a permit or a consultant to read.
What a consultant adds is method: fixed plots, measured depths, dated photographs, and a written statement of what was measured and what was declared. A landowner who records the ground first, in the season that shows it, arrives at that assessment with better questions and a shorter bill.
